Photos uploaded on Flickr

Hi: I've uploaded some photos taken from the videos using our wonderful Flip video. I made them public but wasn't sure if I should limit to "friends"? I couldn't see where to upload the entire video however. Are we to take videos of addresses with no ads also? And each sheet is for one address only, but can have multiple ads, right?

Some of the addresses have menus posted on their windows, which wasn't a choice on our coding sheets. Will they be considered "ads"?

I found that some ads have such small print (like menus) that it is hard to get a good shot with the camera.

Also, not sure what "bus bench ads" are.

I'm glad we're doing this in pairs; it would be much more efficient to have one person taking video, the other coding. I was worried that someone may ask what I'm doing too, esp. when a guy (a clerk or guard) in the store was looking at me.

Congrats, Yat! Wonderful progress, I'm delighted to see what you posted.

A few answers to your queries:

- About Flickr: I think leaving the Flickr stream open to "everyone" is fine. I'm not sure how to upload video there, the still photos are fine, but it would be nice if someone figures out how to do the video upload, that would be great.

- About the Data Sheets: Yes, one sheet per address. It can have multiple ads. Remember too that you want to collect a sheet for each address, even if there is no ad. I'd say "no" to counting menus posted.

- Bus bench ads are probably better named "bus shelter ads." Those are the places that people stand and wait for buses. There are usually ads on those.

Great job! ;-)

Yat -

I looked at your photos and that is great that you have explored so much of the project! I might call on you for some Flickr help. . .

They photos you took raise an interesting question for the project. Is the focus on health promoting/harming CORPORATE advertising or bodega/individual store advertising?

For example, I think that a Marlboro ad is much different than an advertisement for doughnuts that a small Mom & Pop store made at Kinkos.

While I think it is important to document both, perhaps we want to make the distinction between the two when we are in the field.

The Marlboro ad was found in front of a glass window of a local deli store. All seven photos were taken from stores on one block near where I live. I thought the project description specified ads for tobacco, alcohol and food to be included.

Definitely. I think that all of them should be included, but I think that there is a subtle difference between the two and we might want to note that difference.

For example:

In my neighborhood there is a deli that has a banner which says: "Cold Beer" that they made.

On their door they also have a corporate Magic Hat Beer advertisement.

Both definitely need to be included in the count and photographed. I think that there is a big difference between the two of these . Just wanted to start a discussion about the relevance of that difference to the project.
